Welcome to Low & Johnson – Insurance tips – Newsletter. Host Liquor Liability
In this day of tough DUI laws and lawsuit exposure, you may wonder how your insurance will respond if you provide liquor to someone who later either causes bodily injury or property damage and you are then named in the lawsuit. Most homeowners and business insurance policies include coverage for Host Liquor Liability within the general liability limits. This provides coverage if you serve liquor to anyone, including your employees or guests. The key to this coverage is that you must ‘give’ the liquor away. In other words, if you are in the business of selling alcohol or if you will be providing it at a function and charging for it, you will need to purchase a separate Liquor Liability policy. Please note: J. Michael Low is a former AZ Director of Insurance, and is the founding partner and an attorney with Low & Childers, PC of Phoenix, AZ. He is still practicing full time and has agreed to help Low & Johnson on certain coverage and claims issues relating to insurance. He is not issuing legal opinions or legal advice on behalf of Low & Childers. Mr. Low is a licensed property and casualty producer in the state of Arizona.
